ABSTRACT: textbooks or foreign language teaching manuals (FL), specifically Portuguese as a foreign language, tend to reinforce in their textual production a stereotype that refers to the sociocultural aspects of the speech community, in this case, Brazil. In this sense, the objective of the article is to describe and analyze how the cultural texts present in these manuals produce these stereotypes. For the theoretical foundation, we used the contributions of Amossy; Pierrot (2005) who characterizes the stereotype as a “prefabricated image”; the concept of context and ideology by Van Dijk (2012), with emphasis on what the author calls mental model, among others. The corpus consists of excerpts from the textbook Samba, Portuguese as a foreign language manual, (2020) in which, through the method of descriptive and analytical analysis, we selected texts that address cultural issues or aspects of Brazil. As a result, we intend to demonstrate how the construction of the image of Brazilian culture circulates in these discourses and, also, to analyze how such regularity of discursive construction becomes a regular practice of stereotyped formation.
