Abstract

This paper presents the development process of the serious digital card game “Tell Me a Story!” as a result of the professional master's degree in Creativity and Innovation in Higher Education Methodologies program (PPGCIMES) at the Federal University of Pará (UFPA). The aim of the game is to encourage oral communication in English among undergraduate students from the Bachelor's English Language course or other educational contexts, such as basic education. The research was based on the Design Thinking methodology (Cavalcanti & Filatro, 2016) and Game Design methodologies (Rollings & Adams, 2003; Mitgutsch & Alvarado, 2012; Schell, 2015), employing a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive approach. The testing and validation phases of the game showed that “Tell Me a Story!” reduced communication tension in the language through playfulness, an inherent characteristic of games. It also facilitated the development of vocabulary related to everyday life, thereby encouraging students to communicate orally on familiar subjects. Furthermore, it promoted interaction among students with varying language abilities and allowed them to become the protagonists of their English language learning journey. This, in turn, encouraged autonomy and decision-making regarding their strategies in the game, as well as the construction of their oral narratives in the target language.
