STRATEGIES FOR LINGUISTIC AND SCIENTIFIC DIVERSITY IN THE FRAMEWORK OF LATIN AMERICAN REGIONAL INTEGRATION

In accordance with the fourth UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), "Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all", we propose a reflection on the role of linguistic diversity and the absence of minority languages in the production of knowledge. At the same time, we denounce the imposition of English as the universal academic language at the expense of local languages, threatening the production of knowledge in the countries of the so-called Global South. We exemplify this imposition by analysing the processes of internationalisation of Latin American universities, which have reinforced asymmetries between institutions and countries, instead of promoting a common regional academic space that is committed to culturally and linguistically diverse scientific knowledge. We believe that cooperation between the countries of the region could consolidate a multilingualism capable of giving a voice to historically silenced linguistic communities and promoting relations between their countries.
