Abstract

This study aims at investigating the importance of inserting playful elements in the form of storytelling to work on English vocabulary development with first grade students of elementary schools. As storytelling has been part of the child’s universe since very early, the insertion of this element in the educator’s pedagogical action makes this learning process more meaningful for the child, which leads to a more effective and pleasurable learning. This is a qualitative action research investigation from a nonpositivist perspective. It also contains elements of ethnographic research, since the data collection was gathered in the researcher’s professional context. Taken from the activities performed and analysed from the data collection it may be concluded that by bringing the context of the classroom closer to the children’s world, through storytelling, greater engagement and motivation are achieved, which reflects, in the specific case of this research, on a better English vocabulary learning.
