Abstract

This research investigates how the development of specific listening strategies can impact positively in the performance of elementary level school learners (Ensino Fundamental II).  With the support of specific listening strategies, the objective was to help students increase their motivation and find relevance in the listening comprehension tasks. Action-research was the chosen methodology in this study so as to trigger reflection on both the teacher’s and learners’ actions at a public school in São Paulo. The data collection was done by means of questionnaires, surveys and a sequence of activities focused on listening comprehension strategies. Data analysis was based on Scrivener (2011), Brown (2001) and Field (2009) studies, prioritising process over result. The difficulties experienced by students were related to the strategies processing of specific information and, during the activities, they could increase awareness of those strategies. Further results promote reflections on the relevance and practice of microtasks.
