Extralinguistic effects in the perception of English as L2
Keywords:
Perception, L2, Extralinguistic phenomenaAbstract
Brazilian learners of English as L2 may have difficulties in the perception of the sounds of the English language due to factors such as: time of exposure to the language, motivation, quality of the input during learning activities, age of introduction to the L2 and the use of the language in meaningful activities. Due to these factors, in this article, we will present the findings of a research that evaluated the effect of extralinguistic phenomena in the perception of 5 Brazilian learners of English as L2. The starting point for this analysis was a questionnaire that evaluated the profile of the subjects who did perception tasks. The research revealed that the subjects who had more experience using the L2 not only in terms of formal language learning, but also in meaningful activities, showed better performance in comparison to the subject who had less experience learning the L2 in a formal context and less use of the language in meaningful tasks.
